Past vs. Present

"You can't change anything in the rear view mirror. You have to look through the front windshield." ~General Colin Powell

I had the opportunity to hear General Colin Powell speak at the "Get Motivated" seminar (along with 20k of my closest friends) as well as other great speakers. He said this during his speech and it really hit home for me. I know a lot of people who are having this challenge of not living in the present and going back to the past that's keeping them stuck. Why do you think this is?

I'd say that it's fear of the unknown (the future) vs. the pain of what they already know (the past). This is keeping many people from getting what they want, because they can't get out of the trap they are caught in. It happens to all of us and the best way to deal with it is to focus on the present, even if it is only 1 day at a time, or even the next hour instead of reliving the past.

Too often we start to focus on the present and something pops into our head and we are back again in the past.  The key is to be aware of what has happened and when you notice it, change it back to the present.

A lot of people will say to me, "Oh yea, I left the past in the past." However, when challenges come up, they fall back into the state that kept them stuck in the past, so have they really left the past in the past? Don't think so...but you can. How you ask?  Stop thinking, breathe and know that nothing in the past can get you to where you want to go.

Focusing on the present allows you to plan for the future. Focusing on the present allows you to eliminate the past from the discussion. Focusing on the present allows you to be ready for everything that comes to you! Focusing on the present allows you to be prepared.

Take today and focus on today! Focus on the present.
What do you think?

Know. Be Known. Make A Difference!
