It All Depends On You

“There are admirable potentialities in every human being. Believe in your strength. Learn to repeat endlessly to yourself, 'It all depends on me.”~ Andre Gide

Do you believe in your strength? It's so much stronger than you give yourself credit for. Your potentialities are so vast that we can't begin to comprehend them. So what do we do with those potentialities? We let them die a slow death...

Imagine if you were to use ALL of your potential. What would that do for you and your business? Imagine if you only used 50% of that potential? You still would be twice as far ahead as you are now. Don't let your potential die a slow death. Don't let your tombstone read "He had such great potential." Wouldn't it be great if when we all die people said "He reached and exceeded his potential."

You can do that.  You just need to always be present.  "Wherever you are, be there."  That will start your brain working on that potential.  Being present means also being aware.  A lot of times we just float through life unaware and we miss opportunities to use our potential.  Stop being unaware!  Believe in your strength! Be present!

Don't Let Time Run Out On You

“Many people die with their music still in them. Why is this so? Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it, time runs out.” ~Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

Are you getting ready to live? Stop it and LIVE NOW! Before you know it, time runs out...Tomorrow is promised to no one, yet we act like we have all the time in the world to do the things we really want to do...and we keep putting them off.

Someday.  Someday.  Here's a little secret...Someday never comes!  How many times have you said, "I will do that someday..."  "Someday we will go there"  Someday never comes.  Make plans and schedule it NOW, otherwise you will never do it.

Don't let your time run out with music still in you. What have you always wanted to do?  Do the things you have always wanted to do. Are you letting circumstances dictate what you can do? Don't let circumstances dictate that you can't do what you want to do. It is your choice to either do it or stay "getting ready to live."

Past vs. Present

"You can't change anything in the rear view mirror. You have to look through the front windshield." ~General Colin Powell

I had the opportunity to hear General Colin Powell speak at the "Get Motivated" seminar (along with 20k of my closest friends) as well as other great speakers. He said this during his speech and it really hit home for me. I know a lot of people who are having this challenge of not living in the present and going back to the past that's keeping them stuck. Why do you think this is?

I'd say that it's fear of the unknown (the future) vs. the pain of what they already know (the past). This is keeping many people from getting what they want, because they can't get out of the trap they are caught in. It happens to all of us and the best way to deal with it is to focus on the present, even if it is only 1 day at a time, or even the next hour instead of reliving the past.

Too often we start to focus on the present and something pops into our head and we are back again in the past.  The key is to be aware of what has happened and when you notice it, change it back to the present.

A lot of people will say to me, "Oh yea, I left the past in the past." However, when challenges come up, they fall back into the state that kept them stuck in the past, so have they really left the past in the past? Don't think so...but you can. How you ask?  Stop thinking, breathe and know that nothing in the past can get you to where you want to go.

Focusing on the present allows you to plan for the future. Focusing on the present allows you to eliminate the past from the discussion. Focusing on the present allows you to be ready for everything that comes to you! Focusing on the present allows you to be prepared.

Take today and focus on today! Focus on the present.

Have You Embraced Mediocrity?

"Mediocrity is a form of madness, a dream embraced by the masses because it makes just getting by an acceptable -- sometimes applauded -- social art form." ~Guy Finley

Have you embraced mediocrity? No?  Really? Are you excellent in every thing? Do you always strive to be the best that you can be, or do you sometimes slack off...just a little?

We have become a society that makes getting by an art form. Working for "the man," doing enough to not get fired, but not going all out to stand above the crowd. Too many people are playing small. The world is not served by your playing small...PLAY BIG!!!

Look at the things you do. What are you an expert at? What are you good at. Where have you settled on being mediocre? I'm sure there are not any places that you would say you are terrible, so let's make mediocre as the bottom rung.

How can you move out of mediocrity? Do you even want to? Or does that frighten you too much. You were meant for so much more, go for it!!!

Let's take a look at settling. One of my favorite quotes says "The place for what you want is currently occupied by what you have settled for." Is that you? Have you settled on mediocrity? I sure hope not...

Be You! It's Your Most Important Job

"Your most important job is to be you. There are contributions you can make, and gifts you have to give, that no one else can duplicate." Ralph Marston
You have a perspective that is unique and valuable. No on else has your unique viewpoint!
No one else has the same valuable insights that you have.
Share the insights and energy that come from that perspective.

You have feelings and longings that flow from the core of who you are. Express those feelings and fulfill those longings in your own special way. The world is waiting to hear those feelings and longings. Don't deprive the world of that opportunity to learn.

There is great treasure in your authenticity. Your authenticity is what brings the world to your doorstep. There are beautiful possibilities that spring from the genuine person you are. Don't hide them, let us all share in those possibilities.

Through you, life experiences itself in a way that is unique and special. If you don't share it with the world, that unique and special experience dies with you, never to be shared. Don't cheat the world from your uniqueness!

Use this opportunity to make a difference in a way that only you can do.

Success Is A Lousy Teacher

"Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose." ~Bill Gates

Have you been successful before? Are you successful now? Have you found that you learn more from success or more from failure? Why is it that our society so deeply frowns on failure?

What is failure? How do you describe it? How do you feel about it? To me, failure is nothing more than feedback. It's telling me that what I'm doing isn't working and I need to change the strategy or the direction that I was going. Most people when they fail, either quit or "try harder." Are you "trying harder" but getting the same results?

Einstein said that "Doing the same thing over and expecting a different result was insanity." Yet how many people do you know that are doing that?  Are you just doing the same thing over and over?  STOP NOW!

Success is a lousy teacher. Why do you think so many championship teams don't make it back to the championship game? Their success didn't teach them to be better, they didn't have the same hunger and with everybody trying to beat the champs, their success wasn't able to allow them to be prepared for the new challenges.

Most of you reading this are smart...Don't let your success make you think that you can't lose.

Choose To Be All or Choose To Be Less

"Every life form seems to strive to its maximum except human beings. How tall will a tree grow? As tall as it possibly can. Human beings, on the other hand, have been given the dignity of choice. You can choose to be all or you can choose to be less. Why not stretch up to the full measure of the challenge and see what all you can do?~Jim Rohn

Why, when you have been given the "dignity of choice" would anyone choose to be less than they can be? Is it because it's too hard? Is it too much work? Does it interfere with your surfing on the web or playing video games or the Wii?

A tree, given no choice, simply grows and grows and grows until it dies. I've been to most of the National Parks in the country, and I have seen some weird growing trees, around rocks, through rocks, trees shaped like a Z to grow around an obstruction...but still growing.

You being less than you can be does nothing for the world or yourself. Why play that game? There is so much more out there for you to go after...DO IT! Stretch to the full measure of what you've been put here to do and DO IT! Don't wait for someone else to tell you what to do, but if you need permission to DO IT, I GIVE YOU PERMISSION.

Mark Twain said that "In 5 years, you will be more upset about the things that you didn't do, instead of the things that you did do." Don't regret not doing what you were meant to do.  If you don't do it, the world will never see it because only you have been given that dream!

Choice, Not Chance

"Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved."~W.J. Bryant

Are you waiting for destiny to happen to you? A lot of people are and guess what? For them, it will never come!! What are you waiting for?  Why are you waiting to create your life?  It's not a matter of waiting until your "ship comes in," you have to swim out to meet it!

It is a matter of choice, not a matter of chance.

Most people meticulously plan their 2 weeks of vacation but don't bother to plan their life. HOW CRAZY IS THAT? They think that their destiny will just happen to them. Sorry to burst your bubble here, but that just ain't happening.  Most people don't really know what they want...and that's what they get, nothing.

The future just doesn't happen, it's shaped by the decisions we make. Every decision we make will go into how our future will look. Do you think about that before making decisions, or are you just making the decision based on what's good for right now?  We have become a microwave society, making decisions based on what we want NOW.

Destiny isn't something to be waited for...it is something to be achieved! And just because you haven't gotten where you want to be, that isn't a good enough excuse to wait even one minute longer.  Make it happen, NOW!

There Are No Mistakes!

"There are no mistakes. The events we bring upon ourselves, no matter how unpleasant, are necessary in order to learn what we need to learn; whatever steps we take, they're necessary to reach the places we've chosen to go." ~Richard Bach

Our society has programmed us to believe that mistakes and failures are to be avoided AT ALL COSTS. This is just plain wrong. How will we ever learn and grow if not from our mistakes and failures. I choose to look at failures as feedback, nothing more, nothing less. It is showing me that what I'm doing is not the best way to do whatever it is that I'm doing.  It is a necessary thing we must go through to get to where we want to go.

We have learned to castigate failures, to scorn them, laugh at them, put them down...With these actions tied into failure, it's easy to see why our society tells us to avoid it at all costs. But what if we ALL looked at failure as the feedback that we need to do things better? Now that's not so bad is it.

Thomas Watson, founder of IBM said that "The fastest way to success is to fail faster." But if we are avoiding failure, then the opportunity for success remains at a distance.

Work on seeing what you might call "failure" as feedback. And see how it affects your frame of mind and thought process.

"There are no mistakes. The events we bring upon ourselves, no matter how unpleasant, are necessary in order to learn what we need to learn; whatever steps we take, they're necessary to reach the places we've chosen to go."

What's Your Why?

"If you're not making much progress, it's time to give yourself a boost. Remind yourself why."~Ralph Marston

What's your why? Do you know why you are doing what you are doing. Remind yourself why you selected the priorities that you now follow. Remind yourself why you are where you are.

Perhaps it is time to focus on a new destination. Or perhaps you could simply use a good, clear reminder of what's truly important to you. What IS important to you and Why? When was the last time you thought that?  The reason most people don't get what they want is because the are not clear on what they want.

It can be all too easy to get caught up and dragged down by the day-to-day business of life. To deal with all the crap that comes your way, other people's bad attitudes, mean people and things that cause us to forget WHY. Take time to regularly give yourself the benefit of the big picture.

Take time to treasure the things you treasure. Admire, appreciate and be inspired by all that is beautiful to you. Take the time to be inspired this weekend. Do something that you love to do and haven't done in a while because of dealing with all the stuff thrown at you.

The best of what can be is yours to create and experience. It is your choice to either do it or not. IT IS YOUR CHOICE, NO ONE ELSE'S. Remind yourself why, and make it so.

First A Dream

"Nothing is as real as a dream. The world can change around you, but your dream will not. Responsibilities need not erase it. Duties need not obscure it. Because the dream is within you, no one can take it away."~Stephen King

Do you realize that nothing is as real as a dream? Most people can't understand that. Your dreams can be as real as you want them to be, but unfortunately, most people choose to leave their dreams in lala land and never take any action toward making the dream happen.  Why is that?  Is because of fear?  Is it because if you go after your dream and fall short you will be disappointed?  Marianne Williamson said, "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us…"

Your world can change around you, but your dream remains. Responsibilities can't take your dreams away, only you can take your dreams away. Your dream is within YOU. You are the chief caretaker of your dreams.  Carl Sandburg said "Nothing happens unless first a dream." The dream comes first.  What are you doing with your dreams?  Are you keeping them safe, in your head or are you taking a chance with your dreams, taking action, taking your dream from your head and bringing it in to your reality?

This is your choice. You get to choose. No one else has a say in it. Choose wisely.

What Is Your Next?

"What the caterpillar calls the end of the world the master calls a butterfly." ~Richard Bach

Emerson said that "Few people have an next, they live from hand to mouth without a plan, and are always at the end of their line." Is that you? It doesn't have to be! You can choose right now to have a plan, to put it into action and move forward and see the butterfly!

What is your next?  Are you living hand to mouth without a plan?  Are you always at the end of your rope?  I hate to say this but if you are, it's what you are choosing.  Choose to have a next.  Choose to create a plan.  Choose to climb up that rope to the top!  If you are having trouble seeing how this can happen, message me here and let's talk.

What do you call the end of the world? Is that the extent of what you can see? If so, that's too bad, because for many people, they are destined to lived in that dark, hopeless world, only seeing the bad and never celebrating the good.

Think of the transformation of the caterpillar...He sees its world changing and it going through something, but not really knowing what...Goes to sleep for a while, wakes up and it has WINGS, and is stuck in this sticky place that it must break free of. It struggles and struggles (because there is nothing anyone else can do to help him...might be something to learn there...) and finally breaks FREE!!!

Before, it was limited to crawling along the ground, slowly, with danger all around it...Now, it can FLY! It is free to go wherever it wants to go!!! How could this be reflected in your life?

Working Harder On Yourself!

“If you want to be wealthy and happy, learn this lesson well: Learn to work harder on yourself than you do on your job.” ~Mr. Shoaf (Jim Rohn’s mentor)

Are you working harder on yourself than your job? Really? How are you doing that?

We all try to work hard at our jobs, but how much time do we really spend working on improving OURSELVES? Sure you might go to the gym, run, exercise and eat right, but how much time are you spending on improving YOUR MIND? Are you learning new words to expand your vocabulary? Are you learning new and better ways to make decisions? Are you learning new things? Maybe a new language, studying about history of The United States, not the history you were taught in government schools...

Personal Development precedes Business Development, so if you are struggling in your business, or just stuck, get back to working on yourself!  You cannot improve your business without first improving you.

Every little bit of time we work on improving ourselves gets paid back with compounded interest, so spend a little time working on YOU. And then, start spending more time working on YOU. You will be surprised and happy about the results...

What Are You Doing For Others?

Life's most urgent question is: What are you doing for others?~Martin Luther King, Jr.
What
are YOU doing for others? This used to be important, 20, 30 years ago and we got away from it, but now, some people are starting to realize that it is what is MOST important to almost anything. It is no longer "what can I get for myself," but "How can I serve others?"

So I ask again, what are YOU doing for others? Think about it for a while. This goes beyond what your business does for others, what are YOU DOING FOR OTHERS? And How are you doing this for others? And Why are you doing this for others?

Emerson said that "A man cannot truly help another person, without it helping himself." Do you realize that is the way the world works? When you help others, when you do for others, you end up helping yourself? We as a society have fallen into the "ME" trap. Here in the United States, it used to be US. But with political correctness, we've been divided into groups and classes.

We've been duped into believing that if I become part of a group, I can get what I want. What happened to the rugged individualism that made this country great? What happened to American Exceptionalism? We've thrown it away all for diversity and political correctness!!!

King also said, in his "I have a dream speech," that he hoped that someday, "his children would be judged on the content of their character and not on the color of their skin." I wonder what he would say about today's society?

Take some time today and DO something for some one else.

Thoughts, Opinions and Mimicry

“Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”~ Oscar Wilde

Are you you? Or are you what someone else wanted you to be? Maybe your parents, teachers, peers? Did you do stuff to please other people or did you do stuff that you wanted to do? Who are you? Think about it for a while and then try to decide if you are being authentic or you're being what others want you to be.

Are your thoughts someone else's opinions or are they yours? Have you washed other people's opinion through your brain and come up with what you believe or are you just living a mimicry? You can believe what other's tell you, but be sure to run it through your own analyzer (brain) and make sure that you can say, "yes, I believe that too." Because you thought about it, not because someone else said it.

Quotations are a passion of mine, but my passion isn't a quotation. There's a mind-bender...figure it out yet? Is your passion just a quotation or is it real, vivid, alive, driving you forward?

Like we talked about yesterday, passion is the wind that drives your sail and nothing great was ever done without passion. What is your passion???

Gale Force Of Passion

“Our passions are the winds that propel our vessel. Our reason is the pilot that steers her. Without winds the vessel would not move and without a pilot she would be lost."

How fast is your ship sailing? Does it have the full gale force of passion behind it or is it just meandering slowly across the water?  Is your passion the driving force behind what you do?  Or are you just floating through life, playing small? Does the passion come and go like a gust or is it steady, moving you in the direction that you want to go?

How often do you reasses your passion to see what level you are operating at?  Too many of us have let the passion slip away and we are just doing things because we have always have done them...No passion.  No why.

Is your vessel lost? Is it without a pilot to steer her? Does the pilot know clearly where it is headed or is the place just 'somewhere over there?' Does the pilot have the knowledge to know what to do when the gale force winds of passion drive the ship?  Our challenge arises because most of us have no real clarity about what we really want.  Sure, you have wants, but without clarity, those wants will never be satisfied and that is why we stay stuck.

As you think about your ship and the destination that you are headed to, what do you see? Are there storm clouds ahead or will it be smooth sailing? Maybe it will be a little of both, but are you ready for anything?

Get crystal clear on what you want...and then go out and grab it!

Clarity Of Mind

“Clarity of mind means clarity of passion, too; this is why a great and clear mind loves ardently and sees distinctly what it loves." ~Blaise Pascal

Do you have clarity of mind? Really? Most people don't and that is their biggest challenge to getting the things they want. They aren't clear on what they really want. They say I want this or I want that and never become CRYSTAL CLEAR on what it is that they truly want. Most people say that "they want to be rich."  What does that mean??  That's not crystal clear, that's feel good mumbo jumbo.  A lot of business owners say "I want to do better than last year."  By how much?  Even making $1 more would be "better than last year."  Take some time right now and think if you are Crystal Clear on what you want, because without it, you're just wasting your time.

Do you have clarity of passion? If you don't have clarity of the mind, you can't have clarity of passion. You can have passion but if it isn't clear, it isn't as white hot as it can be. Most people have some passion and they may even say it's real strong passion but imagine your passion 10 times stronger, 20 times stronger. That is what will happen when you have clarity of passion.

Work on having Clarity of Mind and Clarity of Passion today and let me know how it went and how different you felt.

Investing In Your Future?

"Every 15 minutes invested in your future is a deposit that will grow and compound over time. It may not seem like a big deal now -- whether you spend that time surfing the Internet or updating your Rolodex -- but in the long run, it will make all the difference in the world." ~Michael Masterson

We are all busy. We all have multiple responsibilities. But success is a result of your behavior. And the way you act when you have spare time is a crucial part of it.

Are you even investing 15 minutes a day in your future? Why not? It will grow and compound over time, but you have to start somewhere. Start with 15 minutes, start with 10 minutes, even 5 minutes but start investing something in your future.

Here's an idea that will double your business in 6 months.  Spend 30 minutes every day working ON your business before you work IN your business.  Spend the time thinking, seeing what works, what doesn't, what could work, what won't work.  Every day THINK about your business and how you can improve it, change it and grow it.

The hardest part is simply starting, so just do it. What are you waiting for? Your future to come to you? It's not going to happen. Create your future. You can start with 5 minutes a day.

Are You A Slave of the Ordinary?

“Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.” ~Sir Cecil Beaton

Are you daring? Different? Impractical? What sets you apart from everybody else? Really? Do you have an imaginative vision of what is ahead for you or are you just trucking on down the road, without a thought of what's ahead?

A slave to the ordinary...is that you? Are you a creature of the commonplace? It's real easy to get into a rut of the ordinary. You know what the definition of a rut is? It is a coffin with the ends kicked out, that's what a rut is. Think about that as you go about your day, the same way, day after day after day.

Wilfred Peterson said Big thinking precedes great achievement.”  You will never make a difference being ordinary or thinking ordinary. You won't be known for being a creature of the commonplace if you think BIG!

How can you step out of the ordinary, out of the commonplace? It's different for each individual and you need to seek it out for yourself. I challenge you as this new year is getting started to step out of the ordinary, to be different, to be daring. I challenge you to stop being a "play-it-safer" kind of person.  Become a BIG thinker.

Everything You Want

"Everything you want is outside your Comfort Zone. If you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will settle for the ordinary."

Now, unless you are happy with where you are, you do realize that "Everything you want is OUTSIDE of your Comfort Zone, right? You can't continue doing the same things and expect different results. Where you are now has been based on your current thinking, but your current thinking will not be able to lift you out of this spot. You need new thinking...that's right NEW thinking, or at least different thinking to help you get what you want. Getting out of your Comfort Zone is not always easy and sometimes it's even irritating, but you have to do it if you are going to get what you want.

We really shouldn't call it a Comfort Zone because there is no comfort there.  It's more of a Familiar Zone, becasuse we have become familiar with the pain and the pain we know is always less scary than the pain we don't know.

"If you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will settle for the ordinary." Are you willing to risk the unusual or are you too deeply ingrained in your Comfort/Familiar Zone that you can't? Have you settled for the ordinary when you could have had the extraordinary?

Reminds me of another of my favorite quotes and that is "The space for what you want is currently occupied by what you have settled for." This doesn't just mean material things, but relationships, jobs and thoughts. What have you realized now that you've settled for? Can you change that? Be Genuine And Vulnerable

"Children respond when you are genuine and vulnerable with them. So do adults. Let's cut out the pretentious nonsense and get real in everything we do."~Tom Asacker

Are you ready to cut out the "pretentious nonsense?" Really? What role have you been playing so long that you don't even recognize that it is a role and not who you really are? Start getting real in everything that you do. How would that change your life?

People respond to genuineness and vulnerability. Can you show these qualities or are you too trained never to show emotion, either good or bad? Especially in business. That used to be me. I was a stoic and never realized that I was unable to show emotion or vulnerability. I've been remembering who I was when I was me. Not that genuine stoic who I trained myself to be, but being able to be both genuine and vulnerable...and it FEELS good and bad, but it FEELS. I haven't had feelings like these for a long time.

Jonathan Swift said "May you live all the days of your life." I know that I haven't always done that. I've played a part, but not lived, not really. Is that you too? Have you lived all the days of your life or have you just mailed some in? Maybe you just didn't want to live that day. Never allow that to happen to you. You lose too much not LIVING all the days of your life!

Learn from my example. It doesn't pay to be ungenuine or unvulnerable. It's just not worth it in the long run.

Stories We Tell Ourselves

"Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt." ~William Shakespeare

Do your doubts stop you from doing things? Why? What hold over you do those doubts have?

We all fear some things but our doubts shouldn't be one of those things. Heights, snakes, going too fast, these are some things to fear but not our doubts. Why you ask? Because our doubts are just stories that we tell ourselves, not that there is any truth to them, but stories that we believe.

What stories are you telling yourself that are holding you back?

Don't ever not do something because of a fear of failure. Why? Because you will fail your way to success. It's the only way anyone succeeds. They fail their way to success. Think about it. That "overnight sensation" band that has played every scum bag bar in town for 10 years finally makes it big.

Historically, predators from the T-Rex to today have only been successful in 1 out of 10 hunts. Yet they keep trying, why? Because survival dictates that they do. The same goes for me and you.

Don't let your doubts keep you from the good you might do.

"Whether we want them or not, the New Year will bring new challenges; whether we seize them or not, the New Year will bring new opportunities."~Michael Josephson.

Seize Your Opportunities and deal with your challenges. It's ALWAYS your choice!

"Get inspired by life. Get inspired by the possibilities for friendship, love, achievement and fulfillment." 365 Days, 8760, Hours, 52600 Minutes and 3,153,600 Seconds. That's 2013 in time. What do you plan on doing with your time?

Get excited about the opportunities for growth and rich experience that come with every turn of events. But be sure that you are looking for the growth and rich experience. See it. Live it. Get excited about living in a world that's filled with abundance in every direction. Can you see the abundance around you? If not, look around again. It's there, you just have to open your eyes to it.

Get passionate about making a difference in your own life and in the lives of those you can affect. Get passionate about expressing and fulfilling those dreams that are uniquely yours. Stop playing small, it serves no purpose to the world to play smaller than you are supposed to.

Give meaning to each moment. Be in each moment. Don't be thinking about the past or the future. Be in each moment. Give the best of yourself to everything you do.

"Whether we want them or not, the New Year will bring new challenges; whether we seize them or not, the New Year will bring new opportunities."
