Impose Your Own Terms On Life

"If you haven't the strength to impose your own terms upon life, you must accept the terms it offers you." ~T.S. Eliot

Wow...how many people are going through life simply accepting what life offers them??? I know a lot of people that are stuck in that place. It's a real shame, because our life is what WE MAKE OF IT, not what is presented to us.

So, what's a person to do? Gain or create the personal strength to impose your own terms on life! I know, I can hear you now..."But David, the economy, my 401 now 201k, all this stuff that's happening to me." Do you hear the excuses? It's not the stuff that happens to us...it's how we deal with the stuff that happens to us. WE are in control of our responses. Be in control of your responses and forget about reactions.

Realize TODAY, that you are in control of everything that happens to you. You can react or respond to those things. Work on RESPONDING rather than reacting. And impose your terms on life!

Know. Be Known. Make A Difference!

Think First, Act Afterward

“Self-discipline begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you don't control what you think, you can't control what you do. Simply, self-discipline enables you to think first and act afterward.” ~Napoleon Hill

Mastery of your thoughts. How often do you control what you think about? How often do you think about what you are thinking about? It's called Metacognition and we need to do more of it. Most people just go about their lives without really thinking. The challenge is to really think about what you think about.

"Self-discipline enables you to think first and act afterward.” Think first and act afterward. What a novel concept! Thinking and responding rather than not thinking and then reacting.

Pat Riley said “Discipline is not a nasty word.” He is so right.

Think and respond rather than reacting. Take today to think about what you think about. It might enlighten you to as to why some things keep happening to you. Work on Self-Discipline.

Impose Your Own Terms On Life

Choices,Choices

"You may not be able to control the events that occur during the day, especially those events that are unexpected and challenging. But, you definitely have a choice whether you are going to allow these events to ruin your day, and how you are going to face these challenges." ~Barry Gottlieb

Do you ever get up "on the wrong side of the bed?" Ever had a "bad hair day?" How do you handle them? Do you let them ruin your day or do you change your mindset before leaving the house? You do have a choice in how you respond to those events. Be sure to exercise that choice. Don't stay stuck in that negativity.

Stephen Covey said "If you start to think the problem is 'out there,' stop yourself. That thought is the problem." Too often we get caught up in thinking the problem is 'out there' when it is really with us. Realize that you are in control of your life, no one else is. It will be your choice to either react or respond. Reaction is without thought. Response requires thought. Always respond, never react.

Watch Out Troubles!

"I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!" ~Dr. Seuss

How often do we treat our troubles with a big bat? Not often enough. We don't swat our troubles away, we live in them, wallow in them and stay stuck in them. "Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!" what a great way to face our troubles.

We all have troubles. The problem is not that we have troubles, the problem is thinking that we shouldn't have problems. Life is what it is. We get to decide how to respond to troubles or challenges. It is our choice. Sometimes we have good choices and sometimes the choices are not as good, but we always have a choice.

Action:
Realize that we have a choice to respond. We don't have to stay in the challenge, we can choose to say "Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!"

Know. Be Known. Make A Difference!

Reaction or Response?

“A life of reaction is a life of slavery, intellectually and spiritually. One must fight for a life of action, not reaction.”~Rita Mae Brown

Do you react to life or respond to life? Really? Have you thought about it before? We have been so programmed to respond that it takes a big change to respond rather than react.

What is your first thought when someone cuts you off in traffic? Is it to bless them? Is it to curse them? Is it to understand that they are more important than you are so they can do that? (that's my favorite)

What is the difference between reacting and responding? Good question! Reacting is when you don't even think about what you are doing, you just do it. Responding is taking a pause, thinking about the appropriate response and then responding.

Stimulus - Pause - Response. Stimulus - Pause - Response.

Try it today and see if you day goes any better...

The Quality of Your Day

"To affect the quality of the day, that is the greatest of the arts."~Henry David Thoreau

How do you affect the quality of your day? Do you pray, meditate, exercise, sing, say affirmations? What works best for you? How do you know that it is working best? Have you ever measured it?

It is my desire that The Mastermind Roundtable meetings affect the quality of the days for the people that attend. If you haven't attended, we would love to see you there. We meet every Tuesday morning from 7:30-9:oo at The Village Inn, located at 40th Street and Bell Road.

How do you deal with getting up on the wrong side of the bed? Do you just resign yourself to having a bad day or do you strenuously try to change that attitude? What if you're having a "bad hair day?" Maybe you should just stay home, right? Wear a hat??

Do you realize that how you feel is entirely up to you? Even if you got out of bed on the wrong side, your hair wouldn't do what it is supposed to do and the dog peed on the carpet. How you respond to those issues will determine your attitude. And also realize that none of these things have any control over how you decide to respond to them.

"To affect the quality of the day, that is the greatest of the arts."
